Sula’s Front Porch formed as an emergency band. Some bluegrass players got sick and suddenly the Montgomery Museum’s Heritage Day’s lineup had a hole. So folks who played together at a jam on Sula’s front porch stepped up to fill in. That original lineup that played on Christiansburg’s Main Street included banjo player Russ Boyd, who may be best known as part of the long-time legendary Blacksburg band the Jugbusters. The core of Sula’s Front Porch is award-winning fiddler Aran Garnett-Deakin and Tim Thornton. When she’s not sawing on fiddle tunes or singing Sierra Ferrell covers, Aran can be heard playing with the Virginia Tech Philharmonic Orchestra. She also plays clawhammer banjo, guitar and mandolin. Tim adds guitar, dulcimer, banjo, mandolin and banjo mandolin. He sings a little, too.
